Online Therapy
Are You Feeling Overwhelmed And Depleted But Finding It Hard To Access Therapy?
Do you struggle with symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues but can’t seem to find the time to address them? Are you curious about online counseling but unsure if it’s effective? And does the prospect of going to therapy just feel like another thing to add to your to-do list?
Perhaps you are having trouble regulating your thoughts or emotions. You may often feel overwhelmed or in distress, causing you to wonder if you have anxiety. Or maybe you’re often “down,” numb, and feeling depressed.
It could be that persistent conflict in your relationships causes you to be frustrated or unfulfilled. Perhaps social isolation from others has left you feeling disconnected and anxious. Or maybe you’re exhausted by the demands placed on you at work, home, and elsewhere in your life.
Dealing with emotional distress can lead to physical symptoms, like aches and pains, restlessness, or an inability to sleep. As a result, everyday tasks and situations may have become unmanageable.
If you’re struggling to enjoy life or feel motivated, you might be wondering if it’s time to talk to a therapist. Yet, it sounds less than ideal to leave the familiarity of home to go and share your problems with a stranger.
Online therapy is a great option to help you learn the skills you need to adjust your mindset and feel more in control of your emotions.
We Often Minimize Our Issues Or Assume We Don’t Need Help
Stress, anxiety, depression, and overwhelming feelings have always been human struggles, but these issues have intensified in an era of social isolation. Increased fears surrounding our health, relationships, finances, and an unpredictable future create further distress.
Not to mention, many of us have recently experienced some form of loss, contributing to feelings of grief, sadness, and uncertainty.
Whether we’re expected to be available for work during the day or take care of children and other family members who rely on us, life’s demands can be emotionally, physically, and mentally taxing. But because these are our responsibilities, we can trick ourselves into thinking that the stress they create is just part of life. As a result, we start to believe that therapy and other forms of self-care are for those who have it worse or are expensive, inconvenient errands that we can’t justify.
With a therapist, there is no expectation to be strong or handle the stress alone. And thanks to the accessibility of online therapy services, you can finally find the time for yourself—from the comfort of home—to process your emotions and learn to manage stress.
Online Therapy Is An Effective Way To Target Mental Health Issues
When you’re juggling the demands of life, it can feel like you need to have all the right answers without ever having time to stop and check in with yourself. Yet therapy offers you an opportunity to meet conveniently online with someone who will give you a chance to process and listen to your inner wisdom without judgment and free from the expectations that might be placed on you by family members and friends.
Working together, we can gain new perspectives on your challenges and help you learn tailored skills to manage stress, regulate your emotions, and promote healing.
My Approach To Online Therapy
I meet for online therapy through Zoom or over the phone—whichever you prefer. We will begin our work together with a general intake that will focus on personal strengths and presenting issues. Using this information, we can start to discuss which approaches to therapy might be most effective for you.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you to identify thoughts and challenge behaviors that create setbacks in your life and replace them with more beneficial thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) allows you to overcome obsessive, intrusive, and negative thinking patterns. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) teaches you skills to help you regulate and tune into the mind-body connection in times of distress.
All of these approaches to therapy are effective when done remotely, and studies show that working with a therapist online is just as productive as attending in-person sessions.
How Therapy Can Help You
I will listen and work to understand what you want to achieve out of life. We’ll identify core issues and trace them back to their roots as you gain more clarity on your emotions and thought patterns.
While we will discuss elements of the past as needed, my approach to online therapy is to bring you back to the here and now so that you can start enjoying life and feeling fulfilled again.
In therapy, you can expect to gain increased awareness and insight into your core beliefs and how they are driving your thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. With a refreshed perspective, you will be able to apply new, empowered beliefs that can ultimately improve your response to yourself and the world around you.
Through my precise, tailored approach to counseling, I’ve seen people transform their lives. And many of my clients have found that the convenience of online therapy allows them more time and energy for the other parts of their lives.
Improving habits and developing self-awareness takes skill, but working together, you can overcome the negative patterns holding you back. Therapy allows you to live more fully and through the convenience of meeting online, you’ll have more time to create the life you want.
Maybe you’re curious about counseling online, but you have some questions…
I am worried online therapy is not effective or that being unable to see one another will take away from the experience.
In-person therapy works best for some clients, including those at risk for self-harm, those who disassociate (or “zone out”) when overwhelmed, or those whose home/work situation prevents them from being able to have privacy. For other mental health issues, however, research supports that online therapy is just as effective as in-person.
I’ve found that many of my clients are more comfortable opening up from the comfort of their home. While the phone lends a feeling of anonymity that helps people open up more, being on camera leads to more awareness of messages conveyed by our body language. There are benefits to both styles of communication, and I will tailor remote therapy to your needs. If that means meeting over the phone or online with the camera off, I intend to make therapy feel as safe and comfortable as possible.
How do I know that our online therapy sessions will be secure?
As a licensed social worker, I am bound by law to protect your confidential information. That means I only use HIPAA-compliant technology for online therapy, requiring both passwords and end-to-end encryption.
If you have concerns about the security of our conversations, please let me know. I will ensure that they are addressed and taken seriously.
I am concerned that we’ll have a spotty online connection that will disrupt the therapy experience.
I hardwire an internet connection on my end (as opposed to using Wi-Fi), which helps to ensure a stable connection. If you tend to have internet issues, I’ll likely suggest you do this too.
If any technical issues arise, we’ll collaborate and troubleshoot together. If that means meeting over the phone works better, I’ll work to make sure that you feel confident in the therapy process.
